Despite losing 3-1, Nick Powell showed yet another glimpse of his quality yesterday with a sumptuous finish against an impressive German U19′s side.
After appearing on the bench away at Southampton, Powell travelled with the rest of the squad to Hamburg and showed a surprising burst of pace and great composure to dink a deft chip to leave Odisseas Vlachodimos helpless in goal.
Nonetheless, Powell was outshone by Liverpool’s new acquisition, Yesil, who grabbed two goals and an asssist. Other notable youngsters on show included Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Max Clayton (Crewe) and Nathaniel Chalaboah (Chelsea) who are all darlings of the club’s youth academies. Tyler Blackett, Jack Barmby and Jonathan Sutherland were the other United players on show.
Nick Powell- Manchester United and England U19
Ahead of the start of qualifying for the 2013 European Championship next month, England played a number of the county’s hottest prospects. Despite the result, England coach Noel Blake told the FA.com that he was happy with the result:
“After the first 15 minutes, we really took the game to the Germans, we drove at them and equalised through a terrific goal from young Nick Powell, and dare I say, we were unlucky not to go in at half time with the lead. We retained the ball for large percentages of the game and there were some great performances from our side tonight.”
