In the first part of our new midfield transfer targets series, we’re going to look at the players who have the ability to become United legends as the tenacious, box-to-box midfielder which we are sorely missing.

In the past, United have had many players capable of fulfilling this role but since Fletcher’s loss of form, due to illness, we have been lacking that player who can drive our team to victory because of their attacking and defensive prowess.

Assessed below are five players who all possess power, creativity and ruthlessness and are the essence of box-to-box midfielders:

1. Bastian Schweinsteiger
2. Arturo Vidal
3. Claudio Marchisio
4. Éver Banega
5. Jack Rodwell

  man united need a creative mid. our current midfield is weak and lacks punch. fergie constantly plays a makeshift drip drab centre paring that aernt world beaters by any stretch of the imgination. we need a player like mario gotze, hazard, ganso, marvin martin etc…a good box to box mid would be cheike tiote.

  Jack Rodwell isn't even Everton's best midfielder. Really can't understand why United would want to sign him! …being English isn't enough of a reason.

    John-Have you seen the boy play to say he's not good enough for United?
    He may not be technically gifted but he plays with a passion and desire that the current team lacks right now and maybe being English isn't enough of a reason but it helps to create a bond like the class of 92.

  Hope we get rodwell.He along with cleverly and wilshere are the future of england team.The prospect of him partnering tom in midfield and in a team of jones smalling wellbeck morrisson is mouth watering.
